Things To Know:
Before you commit to adopting a Saint Bernard, please read the All About Saints info on the submenu link above. This will help you understand more about what kind of baby you are about to bring home. The more information you have, the more prepared you can be for adoption day. Also read the link, Common Questions, because I go over the most common questions we always get. Questions like what toys to buy, what bedding, what about training them, what food to give them, and more. Trust me, you want to know these answers before you spend money on preparing for his/her arrival to your home.
Things To Consider:
You’ll also want to read all the above information, so that you can do an accurate assessment as to whether a Saint Bernard fits your family and your schedule. Saint Bernards can’t live their lives in a crate. They need freedom to move. Any caged up animal can turn mean. Keeping any animal caged up is cruelty and abuse. Saint Bernards need to be able to get outside and walk and play. They need to have a constant access to water. They need plenty of nutrients. Like children, they need attention, love, training, etc. They can’t be ignored. You are going to have a dog that will eventually weigh 120-200 pounds. That dog has to learn to obey. The last thing you want is to have a dog out of control when you decide to take him/her on a walk. Potty training takes time and consistency as well. Do you have the time to devote to all of this? Do you have adequate space for a giant dog? Do you have the resources to continue to take care of this growing pet?
No Refunds:
As you will read below, there is a required deposit. That deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE. If you have picked out a puppy and put down the deposit, then change your mind, you will NOT get that deposit back. Hence what non-refundable means. Nor will that deposit be allowed to go to some future litter. The litter you put the deposit down on, is the litter you must choose from. I have people on waitlists for each of our females. I cannot have people transfer to another litter because something happened and can no longer adopt the puppy at this time. This screws things up for others on the waitlists, as well as screw things up for the office side of things. Although I am very sorry you are having to back out, there is nothing I can do to help you with that. This is why I want you to be absolutely sure you are ready to take on a Saint Bernard.
The ONLY exception to a refund is if the puppy you choose dies while in our care. At that point, you can either choose another available puppy from the litter, be put on the waitlist of the next litter (where you will have first choice), or we will issue the adoption deposit fee refund the same way it was paid for.
Window Shopping:
I have had people wanting to come see the puppies and pick them out. We do not allow that. For one, we are not a pet store with window shopping. We are breeders. We have 8 Saint Bernards. They are protective of our home, of us, and of each other. We do not want the mama to get upset because strangers are touching her babies. Your scent on the puppies could cause the mama to reject that puppy and will no longer feed it. We love our dogs. They are family. And with family, you do your best to keep a peaceful and stress-free environment as possible. A lot of breeders do it this way, and we feel it’s what is best for our dogs.
I update social media, this website, and the AKC regularly with photos and videos so that you can be assured of the puppy you are adopting. We are an honest, Christian based family. We do everything unto the Lord because we have to answer to Him. I do offer a live video chat so that you can see the puppy that you are wanting and know that we are legitimate. We hear stories all the time of people being scammed and afraid to try again. We as breeders, have also been scammed. In fact, the AKC warns about the scammers, and they do not allow us to put certain information on our page, so that we are better protected. So it does work both ways when it comes to scammers.
Follow us on Instagram and Facebook, and you’ll see the updates I receive from past “adopters”. You’ll see the comments as well. You can read our reviews and see past litters with their updates on the website. I even post some pictures/videos on TikTok. This is what we have to offer, so you can be assured that we are legitimate. But we will not allow “shopping” for puppies.
Shipping Rules:
We have had people ask about shipping our puppies. I know some breeders have no issues with it and others do. We will not ship our puppies. But we do have people that will fly into the closest airport, come pick up the puppy and then fly home with him/her. This is the suggestion that our vet said we could do, and we respect our vet’s opinion. Metcalf is located in the central/eastern part of Illinois. So for ideas, Chicago O’Hare is about 3 hours north and Indianapolis, IN airport is about 2 hours east of our location. There are smaller airports near by as well. Champaign, IL is an hour north, Bloomington, IL is an hour and half northwest, and Terre Haute, IN is an hour southeast of our location.
Please remember to schedule your flight home at a time that allows for you to get off the plane, come pick up the puppy, and get back to the airport. Allow plenty of time so that you are not having to rush. Also remember the time zones. Illinois is central time. So if you are in the Eastern time zone, you are 1 hour ahead of us. Those on Mountain Time are 1 hour behind us. Pacific Time is 2 hours behind us.
Be sure to check with your airlines on all the rules they have for allowing pets to be on board. You’ll need to know how old the puppy has to be in order to be on the flight. Most are 8 weeks of age. Some even have weight limits. You’ll need to know their requirements for the pet carrier. Make sure your carrier can hold up to 25 lbs. Each litter has been different. But weights of the puppies can be 12-25 lbs by 8 weeks of age. For the people who have adopted one of our puppies and flown home with their puppy, they have made sure the puppy rides in the cabin with them and even reserves a seat for the pet carrier if possible. So be sure to find out from the airline company all their expectations and be prepared.
A health certificate from our vet will be required for you to take the puppy on the plane. Therefore, I’ll need to have information for the flight home- airline company, flight number, date of flight, whether the puppy will be riding in the cabin or cargo, etc. We also require an additional $150 to pay for the price of getting that certificate. The vet has to do a complete physical, he does the necessary vaccine, and he prints up the certificate. We do not receive any money from this. This just covers the cost that we are charged.
Again, once the puppy is in your possession, you will be responsible for that puppy’s well-being and health. You will need to have a pet carrier, food, and water. You will be responsible for following all of your airliner’s rules & regulations for bringing on live animals. I will provide you with the airliner’s necessary certificate of health from our vet.
Please know that the reason we are against providing shipping is due to health risks of the puppy. Animals can suffer heart failure due to the anxiety and stress. They can have breathing issues; suffer from temperature changes in the cargo; be hurt from falling and unsecure items; suffer from the turbulence; get hurt trying to chew their way out of their carrier; all the new noises, sites, and smells can be very dramatic on them.
Adoption Process:
All babies will be adopted out on a first come first serve basis. I will list what we have available upon their arrival. These babies will also be listed on the AKC Marketplace, our Facebook and Instagram pages, and other social media platforms, letting others know that we have babies ready to be adopted. The litter will be registered with the AKC. They will have had their first round of shots and their necessary deworming at the time they can be picked up. (See Common Questions for more info on the vaccine and deworming.)
We do not allow the babies to leave mama until they are 7 weeks old. And we need them picked up by 9 weeks if possible. Anytime after that causes a problem with upcoming vaccines and deworming schedules. It also causes the puppy to be left without siblings to play with. He/she will get to interact more with the adults so he/she doesn’t get lonely. But then that causes all of them to start getting attached to one another. We feel that could potentially cause separation anxiety. We want the adoption process to go smoothly not only for us humans, but also for the puppies/dogs. So please make arrangements so you can pick up your puppy between 7-9 weeks of age.
All of our babies are $1,500 each. We require a non-refundable deposit of $750. This deposit can be paid by Paypal, CashApp, Zelle, or Venmo. We do know that Paypal, CashApp, Zelle, and Venmo may charge fees if money is sent for “goods or services.” You must send it as if you are paying friends or family in order for there to be no fee. If there are any fees taken out, those fees will be put on you the adopter. That fee will need to be paid immediately. Upon receiving the full deposit, the puppy will be marked as adopted. We do not “hold” puppies until you decide whether you want one or not. Again, it’s a first come first serve basis. So if you are wanting the puppy, it’s best to pay the deposit money immediately, or risk not getting that puppy.
Upon receiving your deposit, I will stay in regular communication with you. I will text you updates like weight, pictures and/or videos once a week of your baby growing up. You are always free to call, FaceTime, or text me throughout the adoption process.
Pickup Process:
When it gets closer to time to pick up your baby, we will schedule a day and time of when you can come pick him or her up. Puppies will be picked up at our home in Metcalf. This is the opportunity of when you get to see our dogs playing in the fenced in yard. And depending on whether there are still puppies waiting to get picked up, you’ll get to see them playing with the big dogs as well. I will personally text you our address. For privacy and safety, we will not disclose of that information online.
The remaining amount due, $750, will be required at the pick up. That amount must be paid in cash, Zelle, CashApp, Paypal or Venmo- again sent as friends not services. Upon picking up your baby, you’ll be given an AKC folder with lots of information inside it. There will be an application on how to register him or her into your own name on the AKC website. There will be medical information in the folder as well, for vaccines, deworming, etc. And there will be a page that shows his/her family tree. A small ziplock bag of puppy food will go home with him/her also. (Mix the puppy food with what you are going to be feeding the puppy. Do this 2-3 times and it should help with the transition to the new puppy food.)
Please make the necessary provisions needed so your baby can ride to his/her new home in comfort. You’ll want to bring a covered bowl with water and a food bowl (along with a little food). Also having a couple of toys will help as well. We will send home a beginner’s lead/leash with you in case you need to stop for potty breaks. You’ll need something to help clean up, in case he/she has an accident in the car.
After the Adoption:
If during the waiting time or even after you pick up your baby, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I am here to help you with the transition, and want everything to go smoothly for you and the baby. Even if it’s months or years down the road, please don’t hesitate to ask questions. I am here to help the best I can. We’d love for you to send us pictures and updates as well, so we can see the puppy grow up.
Health & Care:
Upon picking up your puppy, you now assume ALL RESPONSIBILITIES for him/her. That includes but not limited to: veterinary care, any surgeries or medications, vaccinations, worming, rabies, AKC fee, food, water, shelter, and especially your love and attention. So please be sure to take your baby to the vet to keep up with his/her necessary shots and worming schedule. This is important to their health. The normal schedule for shots are 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks, and then 16-18 weeks. The rabies vaccine is usually done around 16 weeks – 1 year of age. It’s highly recommended that you get your baby on a monthly heartworm prevention medicine. So please be in contact with your local vet to find out his/her recommendations for your baby. Also, we strongly advise that you microchip you baby. And make sure you remember to register the puppy with the AKC!
We do not breed unhealthy dogs. We are very serious about making sure our dogs are healthy and have no sicknesses. Our dogs see the vet every year for physicals, vaccines, etc. And if at any time we think they are not feeling good or hurt themselves by running around, they go the vet. These dogs are our family and are treated as such. None of our dogs have been diagnosed with seizures, bloat, or hip dysplasia. They are all healthy dogs. We do treat them for seasonal allergies. We use preventative measures by giving them cranberry pills to ensure a healthy bladder function. We also use preventative measures by giving them joint medicine. All of these things have been approved by our vet. I encourage anyone who adopts from us to ask your vet personally what he/she feels is the right preventative measures for the puppy. I can only tell you what we are doing or not doing based on the guidance from our vet’s office and from other St Bernard breeders/owners.
If our vet ever tells us that there are issues that could be passed down to the puppies, the dog will be fixed and no longer be able to bred. There are no exceptions to that rule! We want all of our grand puppies to be as healthy as possible. That being said, we cannot guarantee the health of the puppy. Nature has it’s way of giving healthy animals and then having animals with issues. It’s no different than with humans. Some parents have healthy children and some have children with health concerns. As a parent, you have to assume that responsibility of taking care of that child regardless of health. It is the same when you take on the risk of adopting a puppy. You take on FULL responsibility of the care and health of that puppy for the life of that puppy.
We do not over breed our dogs either. Our females have different heats. We have some that have only one heat a year. Some of our girls have 2-3 heats a year. God is the creator and designer of ALL things. And our business operates on whatever He decides is going to happen. If the girls get pregnant, then praise God. If the girls don’t get pregnant on a heat cycle, then we still praise God and just wait to see what happens next time. A vet can have their degree and their opinions, but only God knows what is best for everyone and everything. And although we value our vet’s opinions, we will always let God have His way. We will though, stop allowing them to get pregnant after so many pregnancies. It’s not based on a right or wrong theory of them continuing to get pregnant. But, we want them to spend their “elderly” years just chilling and enjoying their “retirement”. In addition, it is recommended from the AKC to stop breeding females by age 8. We have no intention of breeding them to that age. So they will be fixed prior to their “elderly” years and prior to AKC recommendations. Rest assured, we have our dogs’ best interest at heart and want them to always be healthy. They are not “money makers”. They are our babies. We want as many people as possible to enjoy the experience of having a St. Bernard. But we will never jeopardize our dogs’ health in order to help make that happen.
Our Guarantee Policy:
All dogs, no matter their breed, have the risk of hip dysplasia, seizures, bloat, allergies, and the list goes on. We are not responsible for the health of that puppy. We offer 72 hours after pickup to take the puppy to your vet for inspection. If the vet sees issues, we will take the puppy back and give you a refund of only the adoption fee paid. We will not reimburse you for any expenses you have incurred. So if you paid $1500 for the adoption fee, we will refund you the $1500. After the 72 hours, the responsibility is yours for the puppy.
Delayed Pickup Time:
We get asked several times to hold the puppy for an extra few days to weeks because of previous commitments that don’t allow for pickup immediately. Vacations happen, kids’ functions take place, or even wanting us to hold the puppy for Christmas gifts. As explained above, the longer the puppies stay with us the more the separation anxiety will happen. However, we do understand that some things happen or plans were already committed to and can’t be changed. Not too many people want to put their new puppy in a kennel or hire a babysitter. So we will allow for it, but with extra fees charged. This helps cover the cost of the extra food and extra vaccine that is needed. Again, we are not making any extra money off of this. This simply offsets our costs for having to hold the puppy longer than the 7-9 weeks we expect the puppies to be picked up by. The following will be the per week extra charges:
Weeks 10-12: Extra $50 a week charge
Weeks 13-16: Extra $75 a week charge (The Vet now has to see the puppy to do the remaining shots)
We will NOT hold the puppy longer than 16 weeks. If you cannot pick the puppy up before this time, it is advised you wait on getting a puppy until your schedule is more readily available for this puppy.
Other Things to Know:
If for some reason things just do not work out for you to have this baby, please do not give him or her away to an animal shelter or some other facility or store. Please let us know your situation and we will decide if we can take him or her back. We will not reimburse you for any expenses you have incurred nor refund you for the cost of the puppy. But if we can take him or her back, we will do so. There will be no judgment given. You’ll have to turn the puppy back into our name on the AKC at your cost.
We do not put any restrictions on the adoptions. So you can breed or show your baby if you please. We just ask that you do the proper research and be responsible in your adventure. We do not support puppy mill mentalities nor animal abuse. We love all animals. We treat our animals like family, and we hope that you will do the same with the puppy you adopt from us.
If you have any questions or would love to start the adoption process, please send me a message at rd.farms@yahoo.com or call/text me at 270-505-2521. For our AKC records and the adoption process, I will need your full name, address, phone number, and email. FaceTime will have to be scheduled to assure that I am home and available.
